I think that the position of goalkeeper is going to be the final one that we get filled with the highest quality players .

If all the footballing gods banded together and blessed us with an injury free season with the rub of the green on dodgy refereeing decisions, adverse weather conditions and a generous portion of luck then we might finish 5th. If, as usual, they conspire against us with their typical contrariness and playfulness we may end up as low as 12th.

Tottenham won't finish above us and Pochettino will be sacked before seasons end.

If heard we are 200-1 to finish top four. Got to be worth 40p.

I've just bet a Man Utd fan at work that we will finish above them.

Quite serious money at stake.

I'm confident.

Thats fair enough. The spectre of relegation is certainly more realistic than the optimism of a top 4 finish. It's great to look at the squad and feel so positive, but over inflated expectations usually lead to disappointment.

If we're not at least tenth we've underachieved.

Re: Based on the first team as it is now, what final position should we reasonably be aspiring to?
Brucie,

For people like us who have experienced relegation all-to-often over the years, the spectre of it is never too far away. After two poor home losses, a fair amount of backroom upset, and a weak squad, it isn't too ridiculous to imagine us sailing too close to the wind again. I still don't think that those who were really worried a week ago were far off. Importantly, I also think that those in power at the club were worried too and that this played a part in their behaviour yesterday. It simply isn't a risk worth taking for us, so we saw some serious moves as the window closed.

Fair play to them I say, but the situation at West Ham today, is a lot different to the one last week. You're right about the champions league though, I haven't read through the thread but if that has been said then it is clearly ridiculous.

Our goal should always be to win every match and every competition .

Man city, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd

Then about 10-15pts gap to:

Swansea, Liverpool, West Ham, Palace, Spirs

Cosesly followed by:

Stoke, Soton, Leocester, Newcastle, West Brom

The the rest. So hopefully somewhere between 5th and 9th with a cup run.

I'm not doubting that we've acquired well and the squad looks stronger, I was merely commenting on some of the extreme outlooks on display.

I'll admit I was slightly concerned by the losses at home to Leicester and Bournemouth and whilst those fears have largely been allayed, to suggest we could now challenge for the Champions League is ridiculously fanciful.

Re: Based on the first team as it is now, what final position should we reasonably be aspiring to?
I've never thought we had any chance of relegation even before the late signings. having optimism and wanting to do well is what being a fan is all about. what's wrong with some getting a bit carried away after yesterday? I don't see us finishing in the top six yet but why not aim high and who knows where we'll end up

There's a serious lack of logic there. As if yesterday didn't happen.

Alex, if we wait till the end of the season, then our prospects will no longer be our prospects. It's a guess isn't it, do they improve our prospects of finishing higher, I would say definitely. My big problem a couple of days ago was that we didn't have strength in depth and injuries could have killed us off. Now though, we can take some injuries and still field competitive sides.

Call it transformed or changed, our prospects have improved.

But realistically who came in was a striker who may or may not compete with Sakho for a place, an injured midfielder, and two wingers. I think the wingers in particular are very welcome in the squad, but whether they transform our prospects is not clear yet.

Although clearly massively important, transfers alone do not win matches. Whatever Jim White might say.

An improvement on last years finish would be nice.
